Dating Profile Builder

Writing about yourself is one of the hardest parts of online dating, especially if the last time you had to do it was decades ago. This free tool asks you seven quick questions about what you’re like, what you enjoy and what you’re looking for, then turns your answers into a first draft of your dating profile, a shorter version, headline ideas and answers for app prompts. It takes about two minutes, and nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.

How to make your draft your own

The Profile Builder gives you a starting point, not a finished profile. The best profiles sound like the person who wrote them, so it’s worth spending ten minutes making it yours.

  • Add real details. Swap general phrases for specific ones: the walk you love, the book you’re reading, the dish you’re known for.
  • Read it aloud. If it doesn’t sound like something you’d say, change it.
  • Keep it positive. Describe what you enjoy and what you’re looking for, rather than what you don’t want.
  • Keep it private. Leave out your surname, street, workplace and phone number.
  • Keep it current. Update it every few months with something new.

Why these questions?

Good dating profiles tend to do four things: show your personality, show what your life looks like, say what you’re hoping for, and give people something easy to reply to. The questions are designed to cover each of those. The optional detail is the most important one: a single specific line about you is often what makes someone stop and send a message.

If you’d like to mention that you’re divorced or widowed, the tool includes a short, positive sentence you can use or delete. Our guide to what to say on your dating profile after divorce or bereavement goes into more detail.

Your privacy

The Profile Builder runs entirely in your web browser. We don’t store, see or send anything you type or choose. If you’ve agreed to analytics cookies, we record only that the tool was used and the tone and relationship goal you picked, so we can tell whether it’s useful. Our privacy policy explains more.

Frequently asked questions

Can I copy the profile straight onto a dating site?

You can, but it’s best to edit it first so it sounds like you. Adding a few specific details makes a big difference.

Is my information saved?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and nothing is saved or sent to us.

How long should my profile be?

A few short paragraphs is usually plenty. Many apps suit the short version, while sites with longer “about me” sections suit the full profile.

Should I mention that I’m widowed or divorced?

It’s up to you. A short, positive mention is fine, and many people leave it until they’re chatting.

What if none of the options fit me?

Choose the closest ones, then edit the draft freely. The optional detail box lets you add something in your own words.
