Why Do Dating App Matches Chat but Never Want to Meet?

ResearchedUpdated 23 September 2026

It’s one of the most common frustrations in online dating. You match with someone, the conversation is friendly, sometimes even lovely, and yet weeks go by and a date never happens. If you’re over 50 and new to apps, it can be especially confusing. Here’s what’s usually going on, and what you can do about it.

The short answer

  • Most "chat but never meet" situations have ordinary explanations: nerves, busy lives, or several conversations at once.
  • Some people enjoy the attention of chatting with no real intention to meet.
  • A match who avoids video calls and meeting for weeks, while getting emotionally intense, may be a scammer.
  • Suggesting a specific, low-key plan early is the best way to move things forward.
  • If they keep deflecting, it's fine to move on politely.

The common, harmless reasons

  • Nerves. Especially for people who haven’t dated in decades, meeting can feel like a big step.
  • Busy lives. Work, grandchildren, caring responsibilities and health can all make finding time harder.
  • Too many conversations. Some people are chatting to several matches and haven’t decided who to meet.
  • Not quite ready. Recently divorced or bereaved people sometimes find they enjoy chatting but aren’t ready for a date.
  • Distance. You might live further apart than it first seemed.
  • They’re waiting for you to ask. Many people assume the other person will suggest meeting.

The less harmless reasons

  • Validation-seekers. Some people enjoy the attention of matches and messages, with no real plan to meet anyone.
  • Not single. Occasionally, someone on an app is in a relationship.
  • Scammers. Romance fraudsters want long, intense conversations, but never a real meeting.

When it’s a warning sign

Be cautious if someone:

  • has been chatting for weeks and always has a reason not to video call or meet
  • says they’re working overseas, in the military or on an oil rig
  • is very affectionate very quickly
  • wants to move to WhatsApp early
  • mentions money, investments or a problem they need help with

How to turn a chat into a date

  • Suggest meeting early. After a few days to a couple of weeks of good conversation, ask. See how long to message before meeting.
  • Make it specific and easy. “Would you like to have a coffee on Saturday morning? There’s a nice cafĂ© by the park.” is much easier to say yes to than “we should meet sometime”.
  • Offer a video call first if they seem nervous.
  • Keep it short. An hour for coffee or a walk feels far less daunting than dinner.

If they keep deflecting

If you’ve suggested meeting a couple of times and it never happens, it’s reasonable to be direct:

“I’ve really enjoyed chatting, but I’m looking to meet people in person. If you’d like to have a coffee sometime, let me know.”

Then give your attention to other matches. You haven’t done anything wrong. You’ve simply found out they’re not ready for what you want.
