Ghosted After a Good First Date: What Should You Do?

ResearchedUpdated 23 September 2026

The date seemed to go really well. You laughed, the conversation flowed, maybe they even mentioned meeting again. And then nothing. No reply, no explanation. Being “ghosted” is one of the most confusing parts of modern dating, especially if you’re returning to it after many years.

The short answer

  • Ghosting means someone stops replying without explanation. It's common and usually says more about them than you.
  • It's fine to send one friendly follow-up message. If there's no reply, let it go.
  • Don't send repeated messages or ask for an explanation. You're unlikely to get one.
  • Try not to let it knock your confidence. It isn't a verdict on your worth.

Why people ghost after a good date

There are many possible reasons, and you’ll rarely know which applies:

  • No spark for them. They enjoyed it but didn’t feel romantic chemistry, and found it awkward to say so.
  • Someone else. They may have been seeing other people and decided to focus on one.
  • Not ready. Especially after divorce or bereavement, a nice date can bring up unexpected feelings.
  • Avoiding conflict. Some people find it easier to disappear than to have an awkward conversation.
  • Life got in the way. Occasionally, illness, family or work genuinely distracts someone, and they drift away.

What it almost never means is that you did something terrible.

Should you message again?

It’s perfectly reasonable to send one friendly follow-up, particularly if a few days have passed since your last message. Keep it light:

  • “I really enjoyed meeting you last week. Would you like to do it again?”
  • “Hope your week’s going well! Still up for that walk we mentioned?”

If you don’t hear back, that is your answer, even if it’s not the one you wanted.

What not to do

  • Don’t send several messages in a row.
  • Don’t ask them to explain themselves, or tell them they’ve been rude.
  • Don’t check their profile repeatedly or look them up on social media.
  • Don’t assume every future date will end the same way.

Look after your confidence

Being ghosted can sting, especially if you’re new to dating again. It helps to remember:

  • It happens to almost everyone who dates online.
  • A single date gives very little information about compatibility, for either of you.
  • Someone who disappears without a word isn’t showing the kind of communication you’d want in a partner anyway.

Talk it over with a friend, then turn your attention back to other matches.

Is it ghosting or a slow fade?

Sometimes contact doesn’t stop suddenly. It just gets slower and vaguer. That’s often called a “slow fade”. See slow fade vs ghosting.

How to avoid ghosting others

If you decide you don’t want a second date, a short, kind message is always appreciated: “Thank you for a lovely afternoon. I didn’t feel quite the spark I’m looking for, but I wish you all the best.” It takes a minute, and it’s how you’d like to be treated.
